VENTURA, Calif. - The Coast Guard deployed oil skimming equipment while state and local responders displayed other types of equipment and answered questions from residents during a public outreach event, Sept. 13.

The Coast Guard Cutter George Cobb deployed the Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS) just off the coast of Ventura, near the Channel Islands National Park.  The VOSS is designed to be deployed from a number of different Coast Guard vessels, using a weir-type device that shaves the oil from the water surface.

Video of the VOSS deployment can be found HERE

More information about the VOSS can be found HERE

The public outreach day was held in advance of a National Preparedness Exercise Program drill that is being held in Ventura, and gave residents an opportunity to see oil spill response equipment and ask questions of the responders.
