Montebello Unified Command

MORRO BAY, Calif. - The Coast Guard-contracted underwater remotely operated vehicle has completed an initial visual assessment of the S.S. Montebello, circling the wreck to get an updated view as it sits on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, Oct. 12.

Global Diving & Salvage, Inc., engineers steered the ROV around the ship as Coast Guard, California Department of Fish and Game's Office of Spill Prevention and Response, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration technicians watched a live feed from the pilot house.

The initial scan showed no snag hazards or other issues that could impede the operations moving forward.

The next operational mission for the ROV is to locate the position of several cargo tanks on the outer hull.  Once those locations are marked the ROV will clean spots near the top, bottom, and middle of the tanks.  This will allow for the neutron backscatter to obtain more accurate readings as to whether the tank contains oil.
