LONG BEACH, Calif. – Coast Guard Auxiliarist and retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Damaso Sutis was honored by a non-profit group that supports veterans with their Duty Calls award, Nov. 4.
U.S. Vets, which provides services such as housing assistance to veterans, presented Sutis the award for his lifelong service to the United States.
Sutis joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17, during the height of World War II. He retired from the Corps after 24 years of service that took him into three wars, including a landing at Iwo Jima. “Gunny” Sutis currently is a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the official volunteer branch of the Coast Guard, as an Assistant District Staff Officer for marine safety. He also serves on the Los Angeles Harbor Safety Committee and the Recreational Boating Subcommittee.
