Long Beach, Calif. (May 3, 2007) - The Coast Guard cutter George Cobb, a 175-foot buoy tender, deploys the Coast Guard's Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS) from its decks off of Alamitos Bay.  The VOSS is a portable oil spill skimming system designed to convert any suitable ship available into a single ship oil-recovery platform.  The equipment is exercised once a year to ensure its readiness for deployment. This exercise simulated a 500 gallon oil spill.  The VOSS can be used in the event commercial oil spill response resources are unavailable or are exhausted.   (Official Coast Guard Photos by Auxiliarist Kent Monsanto)

More information about the VOSS can be found at: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/nsfweb/nsfcc/ops/ResponseSupport/Equipment/vossindex.html
