SAN PEDRO, Calif - Food Service Specialist 3rd Class Jason Martinez aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Alert is preparing muffins to be served as a desert with the noon meal for the crew, August 14, 2008.

Martinez graduated from Food Service Specialist ‘A' school two weeks ago, and then reported to the Alert, which is based out of Astoria, Ore.

"I get to see Mexico, the Panama Canal and stuff like that. It's pretty cool," said Martinez.

Before being stationed on the Alert, Martinez was a Seaman at Station Umpqua River, Ore.  His hometown is Benicia, Calif.

The Alert is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter that performs law enforcement, drug interdiction, helicopter operations, fisheries enforcement and search and rescue. These duties are conducted in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. (U.S. Coast Guard Photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class Christina L. Bozeman)
