New Transportation Worker Identification Card To Be Implemented At Three U.S. Ports
SAN PEDRO, Calif. - Today, April 14, 2009, transportation workers must have the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to gain unescorted access to certain port facilities and vessels within the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Hueneme. 

Currently, nearly 60,000 Los Angeles area workers have enrolled at the local centers of the 67,000 initially estimated to require the credential within the port.  The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently surged resources in the Los Angeles area to open an additional TWIC activation center, located at the Queen Mary, to accommodate increased demand as the deadline approaches for nationwide enforcement.

Two years worth of planning and several thousand hours of outreach and training will culminate in a multi-agency operation this week to ensure a smooth transition during the TWIC implementation in the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Hueneme.

The TWIC Activation Center will be located at the Queen Mary, at 1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach, CA, 90802. There are currently 7,000 TWIC cards ready to be picked up at that location.
