Coast Guard to Host Media Availability Tomorrow
SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- Los Angeles-area media are invited to attend a search and rescue demonstration tomorrow, April 21 at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.

The demonstration will walk media through a search and rescue case from start to finish, beginning with a tour of Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach's Command Center where distress calls are received, to a full-scale rescue demonstration using a Coast Guard helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and boats from Baywatch Cabrillo.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach is located at 1001 S. Seaside Avenue, San Pedro, Calif., 90731. The Command Center tour begins at 9 a.m. and the search and rescue demonstration will be at 11:15 a.m. Members of the media should arrive at 8:30 a.m.

The search and rescue mission of the Coast Guard is a complex process. The Los Angeles area is unique in that there is unprecedented interagency cooperation in the execution of that mission. This cooperation is critical to the search and rescue process. With the summer boating season fast approaching, we would like to invite the media to help us educate the public about how the Coast Guard works to ensure the safety of our boating community.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be on scene to further promote public awareness of their mission and publicize upcoming events, such as free boating safety checks.
