Coast Guard searching for missing boater near Catalina Island (Update II)

CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. -- Late last night, the Coast Guard suspended the search for a boater who went missing north of Catalina Island early Monday morning.

The initial report of the missing boater came in to the Coast Guard Command Center at 3:29 a.m. Monday morning. The missing boater was reported to be aboard his 12-foot skiff leaving a bait barge near Cabrillo Beach Marina.

A total of 1,596 nautical miles was searched by Coast Guard aircraft and vessels north of Arrow Point, Catalina Island, Calif.  

Multiple vessels and aircraft were used during the search including a 41-foot rescue boat from Station Los Angeles, an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles, an HC-130 aircraft from Air Station Sacramento, the 87-foot patrol boat, Halibut and Baywatch Avalon.
