Boating Safety Lesson - Paying Attention Prevents Accidents

CHANNEL ISLAND HARBOR, Calif. -- Hint - Don’t launch your boat without having the drain plug in place, a lesson that one recreational boater recently learned the hard way when he launched his boat at the Channel Islands Boat Ramp without the plug in place.

His 18-foot boat quickly started taking on water, and after "abandoning ship," he and his friends attempted to move the boat. They only succeded in capsizing the vessel causing a small oil and gasoline spill

A local boater called the Harbor Patrol which was quickly at the scene preventing the spill from spreading into the harbor.

A Coast Guardsman from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands took statements and prepared al report. It was Also determined that the spill was fully contained.

The boater was cited for water pollution and petroleum discharge.

Today was the first day of National Safe Boating Week. The Coast Guard emphasizes that all boaters be aware of safe boating. Know your boat, make sure it is safe and with the right safety equipment .
