Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies sign Memorandum of Understanding |
| SAN PEDRO, The memorandum promotes the effective use of the unique resources and personnel that each agency provides through a cooperative effort to safeguard the Los Angeles County Maritime Region. The Sheriff's Department, Port Police, Police Department and Coast Guard share jurisdiction within the maritime region in many arenas including the enforcement of federal and state laws and protection of life, environment, and property. In the past month the agencies have worked together to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated response to a mid-air collision that occurred May 18, 2009, as well as a four day joint operation over Memorial Day weekend that targeted the enforcement and education of the recreational boater. "Signing this memorandum builds on the opportunity to solidify and strengthen the relationships we already have," said Captain Paul E. Wiedenhoeft, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach. The memorandum was signed by Capt. Paul Wiedenhoeft of the U.S. Coast Guard, Chief Ronald Boyd of the Los Angeles Port Police, Chief Anthony Batts of the Long Beach Police Department and Sheriff Lee Baca of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. |
