Coast Guard aids in searching for cliff jumper

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. — Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach received notification from the Newport Harbor Patrol of a search going on for a missing swimmer at approximately 11:12 p.m. Sunday.

It was reported that the swimmer was seen jumping off Table Rock cliff into the water at Laguna Beach, surfacing with difficulty and then going back underwater and was not seen surfacing again.

The Laguna Beach Police Department and Laguna Beach Lifeguards arrived on scene and conducted a search for the swimmer.

Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter Monday morning to conduct a first-light search, but the swimmer was not located.

The Coast Guard would like to remind the public to exercise extreme caution when fishing or traversing around cliffs, rocks or break walls. When going out, make sure to tell friends or relatives your plans and destination.
