DANA POINT, Calif. — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search earlier today for the man who was believed to have gone overboard from a ferry boat in the waters between Dana Point and Catalina Island Friday, June 19.
The man, identified as Richard Kemp, 58, of Mission Viejo, was reported to have boarded the Catalina Express in Dana Point just before 8:00 a.m. Friday morning bound for Avalon Harbor. When the vessel arrived at Avalon Harbor there was no record of Kemp disembarking and his luggage remained unclaimed.
A search of the area was initiated yesterday after Orange County Sheriff's Department first notified the Coast Guard of the situation and the man's status.
A total of 221 nautical miles was searched by Coast Guard aircraft and vessels between Dana Point and Catalina Island, Calif.
Multiple vessels and aircraft were used during the search including a 25-foot rescue boat from Station Los Angeles, an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles, an HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station San Diego, the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal and a rescue boat from the Dana Point Harbor Patrol.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department will continue to investigate incident as a missing person case.
