Coast Guard responds to disabled vessel near Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif, — The Coast Guard has responded to a distress call received this morning, June 21 from a disabled 42-foot sailing vessel with one person on board forty miles south of Point Conception.
The distress call came into the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach Command Center just after 10:00 a.m. The vessel, Lady B, was experiencing 6 to 7 foot seas with a reportedly small amount of water in the bilge. The water level was not rising. Communications with the vessel were sporadic.
An HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles as well as the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Blacktip and a 47-foot motor life boat from Station Morro Bay were dispatched to the scene. Once on scene the disabled vessel was taken undertow by the 47-foot motor life boat to Coho Anchorage. The tow was then transferred to the Blacktip for towing to Santa Barbara.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters to practice safe boating techniques that include checking marine weather forecasts prior to getting underway and frequently monitoring marine weather broadcasts issued by the National Weather Service and the Coast Guard once underway. If the weather is inclement, the Coast Guard advises that small craft remain in port. If you must go out, make sure to maintain proper safety equipment on your vessel, including floatation devices, flares or smoke signals, a marine VHF radio and leave a float plan with friends or family in case of an emergency.
