Coast Guard responds to vessel taking on water near Santa Cruz Island

OXNARD, Calif. — The Coast Guard has responded to a distress call received this morning, July 26, from a Good Samaritan on scene with a disabled 22-foot pleasure craft taking on water approximately 4 nautical miles northwest of Santa Cruz Island, Calif. with two people on board.

The distress call came into the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles - Long Beach Command Center just after 8:45 a.m over VHF radio on channel 16. The Good Samaritan vessel passed a hand pump to the pleasure craft, but it was unable to keep pace with the rate the boat was taking on water.

A 47-foot motor life boat and 25-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor was dispatched to the scene. Rescue assets from Vessel Assist, a commercial marine assistance provider, responded to the vessel taking on water as well.

Once on scene, Coast Guard members worked with 2 crew members from the vessel and Vessel Assist to stop the flooding with a dewatering pump and right the vessel. The vessel is currently being towed to Ventura Harbor by Vessel Assist where a post search and rescue boarding will
be conducted.
