Missing sailor found safe

CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. — The sailor that was the subject of a search by local agencies was found safe at about 6:30 p.m. by Isthmus harbor police in Isthmus harbor, Catalina.

The sailor was spotted by a local Coast Guard Auxiliarist who reported the sighting to Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach and relayed the sighting to Baywatch and the Harbor police. The Coast Guard had initially received a report at about 10 a.m. of a drifting sailboat about 14-miles off the coast of Catalina Island with no one apparently on board.

The report started a search by, a 41-foot rescue boat from Station Los Angeles, the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin, an HH-65 Helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles, A C-130 rescue airplane from Air Station Sacramento, Baywatch Cabrillo and Baywatch Redondo.

During an earlier phone call with the sailors wife, she reported that he had called her after boarding his red 8-foot dingy and making it ashore for supplies. Personnel in Isthmus Harbor also reported that the sailor had purchased supplies and had left, presumably to return to his boat.

The sailor will be returned to his boat by the Blackfin.
