SAN PEDRO, Calif. — Capt. Roger R. Laferriere, commander of Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, attends the Society of Port of Engineers Los Angeles/Long Beach monthly meeting to speak about the Coast Guard’s role in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina during a slide show presentation Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009.

Laferriere attended the dinner to introduce himself to the Society of Port Engineers and to share with the assembled representatives from the maritime industry his vision and his intentions as the new captain of the port.

“During times of natural disaster, it’s important for us all to come together in collaborative effort to keep our ports open,” Laferriere said.  Citing examples of heroic efforts to restore the flow of maritime commerce following Hurricane Katrina, Laferriere remarked that history has shown members of the maritime industry to be among America’s greatest patriots.

The Society of Port Engineers, Los Angeles/Long Beach is a professional organization whose objective is to maintain an open forum for the discussion of issues affecting the maritime industry and to provide scholarships to California Maritime Academy cadets.  Its members are professionals such as port engineers, marine engineers, shipyard personnel, subcontractors, and suppliers, all engaged in dedicated service to the maritime industry.
