Coast Guard assists partner agencies in Catalina Island rescue

CATALINA ISLAND, Calif. - The Coast Guard coordinated assistance for five people in the water Sunday following a recreational vessel grounding approximately five miles west of Catalina Harbor.

A mayday call came in to the Coast Guard at approximately 10:50 a.m.  A Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles HH-65C Dolphin helicopter and a Baywatch Isthmus small boat were dispatched to the scene once the call was received.

The Coast Guard helicopter and the Coast Guard Cutter Blacktip provided communication and search-and-rescue coordination for the case.

The Baywatch Isthmus small boat pulled the five people out of the water and immediately conducted a transport to an awaiting Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Emergency Medical Services Unit.

All five individuals were transported by the Sheriff's Department's Air Five helicopter to Torrance Medical Center in Torrance, Calif.  The condition of the victims is unknown.
