Coast Guard monitoring removal of grounded vessel

VENTURA, Calif. – The Coast Guard, in partnership with Ventura County Sheriff's Department and Ventura Harbor Patrol, is working to minimize the potential for environmental impact from a grounded vessel located south of the Ventura Harbor entrance Friday, Jan. 08, 2010.

Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Santa Barbara responded to the report of the grounded vessel at Surfer’s Knoll Beach, and is working with the City of Ventura to oversee cleanup efforts.

The owner of the vessel contracted a commercial environmental cleanup company to remove 378 gallons of diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and oily bilge water aboard the vessel. Ventura County Sheriff's Department will attempt to refloat the vessel and remove it from the beach.

The Coast Guard will continue to monitor the situation and coordinate with Ventura County, the City of Ventura, Ventura Harbor Patrol and the commercial environmental cleanup company.
