Coast Guard Station Morro Bay rescues man in distress in Morro Bay Harbor

Morro Bay, Calif. — The Coast Guard rescued an adult male south of Morro Bay following a report of a person in the water near Morro Bay Harbor late Monday, March 8, 2010. A report of a male screaming near Morro Bay Harbor came in from two Good Samaritans, one on his boat in a nearby marina, and the other on land in a nearby neighborhood, was received by Coast Guard Station Morro Bay at approximately 7:00 p.m. Monday evening. A 25-foot response boat along with a shoreside unit from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay, and a Harbor Patrol boat responded by searching Morro Bay Harbor and the surrounding marinas. A man was spotted by the shoreside unit from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay who called in the sighting to the 25-foot response boat. When the response boat arrived on scene they found an adult male who was hypothermic aboard a small dinghy in the mudflats at Fairbank Point, in the South of Morro Bay Harbor. He had reportedly fallen off his dinghy into the 55 degree water at approximately 6:30 p.m. and had called for help. He was eventually able to pull himself back aboard his dinghy where responders later found him at approximately 8:30 p.m. The hypothermic adult male was transferred to local EMTs who transported him to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif. where he was reportedly in stable condition.
