Coast Guard to conduct medevac

LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard will be conducting a medevac Thursday of a 44-year-old man who is experiencing strong stomach pains aboard motor vessel Opal about 50  to 70 miles west of Los Angeles.

Two MH-65C Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles will hoist the patient from the vessel about 9:30 a.m. and transport him to Torrance Memorial Hospital. The arrival time at the hospital should be between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The Coast Guard District 11 Command Center and a duty flight surgeon originally conducted a conference call with the vessel Tuesday. The flight surgeon recommended the vessel continue to San Francisco planning a medevac of the patient when the vessel would be closer to land.

After further consultation with the flight surgeon and assessing weather forecasts, the vessel was diverted towards Los Angeles for safer weather conditions during the patient’s hoisting.

***There will be media availability at 7:30 a.m. at Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles (7159 World Way West).***
