NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The Coast Guard responded Friday to a report of a 16-foot vessel with two people on board taking on water approximately one mile off Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, Calif.

An MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles, Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, Vessel Assist, and Newport Harbor Patrol all responded to the call.

The vessel sank shortly before rescue assets arrived, leaving two people in the water, who were safely recovered by Newport Harbor Patrol.
