Coast Guard Responds to Downed Aircraft Near Ventura

LOS ANGELES- The Coast Guard responded to an aircraft mayday three miles off Point Dume this morning.

Jeff Luboff of Ventura, the pilot of a small aircraft, experienced mechanical failure during a landing and crashed into the water.

An unidentified aircraft spotted Luboff alive in a life raft, and remained onscene until rescuers arrived.

The Coast Guard launched an HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter, a 25-foot Response Boat and a 41-foot Utility Boat from Station L.A. as well as a 25-foot  Response Boat and 41-foot Utility Boat from Station Channel Islands Harbor.

The Coast Guard spotted Luboff's flare and recovered him. He was later released in good health.
