| Search and Rescue Demostration in Marina Del Ray |
MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The Coast Guard will conduct a demonstration of its air-sea rescue capabilities during the Discover Marina del Rey Day 2005 festivities at Burton Chace Park this weekend. Participating in this demonstration will be both Active Duty and Auxiliary Members of local Coast Guard units. The demonstration will feature a Coast Guard rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles, the Coast Guard Cutter Halibut from Marina del Rey, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and Baywatch Lifeguards. The demonstrations will take place starting at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday. This demonstration is special because it will be the first time the units have used life-like mannequins in a rescue and recovery demonstration by a Coast Guard rescue helicopter. The mannequins were designed and developed by a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Jeff Pielet, in an effort to increase the speed and effectiveness of lifesaving by boat crew members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Currently there are five mannequins, Ally, Bert, Charlie, Della and Ernie. What makes the rescue of these mannequins unique is that they realistically resemble the weight and potentially unconscious characteristics of a person in the water. The mannequins are also available for use by the L.A. Country Sheriff's Department, Marine Division and the L.A. County Fire Department & Lifeguards. The tactics and techniques to be used in the demonstration this weekend are the same procedures that the Coast Guard used during the rescue efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Following the hurricanes, the Coast Guard conducted over 30,000 search and rescue cases and provided personnel from across the U.S. to assist in recovery efforts in the Gulf . The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer's who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. |
